As part of the Broad General Education in S1 pupils come to each social subject for a twelve week block, of three periods a week. Pupils will have the opportunity to undertake a wide variety of individual and group tasks to help develop skills and discover information about the following topic areas.

• The making of Ancient Scotland
• Conflict in medieval Scotland

Modern Studies

• Finding out about the world - The Media
• Human Rights and the children around the world

In June each class will take part in a project about different aspects about the country Malawi presenting findings to the rest of the year group.

In S2 pupils visit each social subject for two blocks of six weeks. Pupils will continue to experience a wide range of activities and challenges. Topics of study are;

History

• The Atlantic Slave Trade and it's Abolition
• The Holocaust

Modern Studies

• Participation in UK Democracy
• International Cooperation and Conflict

In S3 pupils continue to experience and develop the level four outcomes of a Curriculum for Excellence and begin to prepare their understanding of contexts needed for National 4 or 5. These topics will be completed in S4.

• Jimmy Reid and the UCS Work In
• The making of Modern Britain - tackling inequalities in poverty, health and housing from 1850 up to 1951 including life during WW2
• The impact of WW1 on Scottish Society
• Germany 1919 - 1939: the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany

Modern Studies

• The work of the Scottish Parliament
• Life in the USA
• Crime & Law in the UK

Pupils have the opportunity to take their studies further in senior years by studying at Higher level and developing their extended writing and evaluative skills.

We currently offer Advanced Higher History in S6 for pupils who have completed Higher. This enables students to undertake a more in depth study of the period covering the reigns of the Scottish Kings Alexander III, John I and Robert the Bruce focusing on the relationship with England and between King and the Community of the Realm. As part of this pupils will write a dissertation focusing on an aspect of their choice.
