No Cosmetics Day 2014

Natural Beauty is Best!

On Thursday 27th February 2014, Bishopbriggs Academy held a "No Cosmetics" Day. This event was in support of Young Minds, a charity which aims to help young people and children suffering from mental health issues. This charity is committed to improving the emotional wellbeing and mental health of children and young people and works with young people, their parents and carers and professionals to change attitudes and make mental health information more accessible to everyone. The event was being held to challenge the pressure on young people and teenagers (particularly young girls) to look attractive through the extensive use of cosmetics.

The day was organised by Miss McGuigan’s third year English class as part of their work on advertising. The idea for the campaign came about after the class studied advertising pitches for a class assignment. The class was asked to create an advert pitch for an issue they thought was affecting their generation. Nearly all of the adverts were about body image which led the class to think about how they could raise awareness of the issue. The campaign collected donations by asking pupils in S1 – S6 not to wear cosmetics that day. This included all types of make up including mascara, false eyelashes, fake tan, hair extensions and hair gel.  The superb sum of £590 was raised - a huge thank you to everyone who participated or contributed during the day.  It was great to see so many young people and staff involved.
