European Day of Languages 2016

In September 2016 S1 – S3 pupils participated in various events to celebrate European Day of Languages.

Our S1 pupils took part in a European Quiz event in the Assembly Hall.  The quiz tested their knowledge of European music, celebrities, brands and languages.  The winning pupils received sweets and SCILT wristbands, as well as house points!

Second year pupils organised and hosted a continental breakfast for staff. They designed multilingual invitations and posters and helped plan the menu.  Two representatives from each class, supported by National 5 and Higher pupils then served breakfast to staff.  We had an excellent staff turnout, and every single member of staff tried to speak a bit of French, German or Gaelic!  The pupils even raised £50 for the school charity, Marie Curie.

Our S3 pupils worked in groups to prepare a lesson, in French, German or Gaelic describing the Bishopbriggs Academy school uniform.  The winning group from each class then taught their lesson to primary 7 pupils at our cluster primary schools.  We had really positive feedback from the schools, with teachers saying that their pupils really enjoyed the lessons and are still talking about what they learned from our pupils!

All S1-S3 pupils were also invited to take part in a House Challenge event. Pupils were given a number of challenges and each one they completed earned them 5 house points. We loved hearing all their European language tongue twisters and seeing their European selfies!

Pupils thoroughly enjoyed these events and hopefully realised the value of speaking different European languages in the world today.
