East Dunbartonshire Council Achievement Awards 2012

On Wednesday 28th March 2012 at a special achievement ceremony held in Bishopbriggs Academy, more than 250 pupils from East Dunbartonshire’s Primary, Special and Secondary schools were honoured for their success during the last year.

This is the fourth year this event has been held by East Dunbartonshire Council as a way of marking the wide ranging achievements of the pupils in all its schools. They were the brain child of Councillor Una Walker who is the Convener of the Council’s Education Committee.

These awards are not restricted to academic excellence and celebrate the local, national and international achievements of young people in the authority. Among other achievements, they recognise success in sport, the arts, enterprise, creativity.

The following Bishopbriggs Academy pupils were among the recipients:

Sophie Sweeney S1

Sophie plays for Celtic Girls U15 Football team, despite being only 12 years of age. The team were winners of the West of Scotland Regional League in 2010 and 2011. Sophie has won League Cup medals in 2010 and 2011 and Scottish Cup medals in 2010 and 2011.

Darren Mitchell S4

Along with dance group ‘Fear of the Unknown’, Darren got to the last three finalists in the Sky 1 contest ‘Got to Dance’ in March 2012, narrowly missing out on the £250 000 first prize.

Sabrina Wong S4

Sabrina is a Taekwondo champion winning:

Gold medal at the Irish Open, 14 – 18 years

Gold medal at the Scottish Open, 14 – 18 years

Gold medal at the Stirling Cup, 14 – 18 years

Gold medal at the Berlin Open

Bronze medal at the Belgian Open

Lewis Boyle S5

Won silver medal at IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) Lotto Cross Cup U17 4k

Gained silver medal at Scottish Schools U17 Cross Country Championship

Has been selected to compete in the Home Nations International Cross Country event in Perth later this year

Was part of the Bishopbriggs Academy Cross Country team who won Bronze medal in Schools U17 Cross Country Championship

Stella Winters S5

Stella was winner of the 1500m gold medal at Scottish U18 Championships

Jack Stevenson S4

In Badminton, Jack has won

2012 Scottish Secondary Schools National Singles Champion u16 

2012 East Dunbartonshire Schools U16 Singles Champion 

2012 Midlands U17 Singles Champion

2012 York U17 Singles Champion

2012 Anglo-Scottish team event -West of Scotland team U16 gold winners  

 

Scotland under 19 squad:

Selected to represent Scotland at UK School Games in London 2012 for singles doubles and mixed

2011 Glasgow Championships U17 semi finalist singles

2011 Yonex East U17 semi finalist singles

2011 Midlands U19 quarter finalists singles and semi-finalist doubles

 

Ranked 6th in Scotland  for  singles U17

Greg Campbell S2

Will visit Germany in July as part of the Scottish Squad for Shotokan Karate

Spencer Wilson S4

Following rigorous auditions, Spencer was selected to dance in Scottish Opera’s production of Hansel and Gretel at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow and Festival Theatre in Edinburgh. Each night was a sell out.

James Kelly S4

James is a member of the Scottish U16 Pool team and in December 2011 became Scottish Masters U16 Pool Champion

David Williamson S2

In 2011 David became Scottish under 40kg Thai Boxing Champion

In January 2012 became under 47kg Celtic Thai Boxing Champion

Andrew McCusker S2

Andrew is the holder of the Scottish Secondary Schools Trophy for Chess

U13 Boys’ Football Team – represented by Grant Henderson

 

Team captain, Grant is representing the Bishopbriggs Academy U13 Boys’ Football Team which has done extremely well in the various football cups in which they played and have received no red cards this season.
