East Dunbartonshire Council Achievement Awards 2011

On Tuesday 7 June 2011 at a special achievement ceremony held in Bishopbriggs Academy, more than 250 pupils from East Dunbartonshire’s Primary, Special and Secondary schools were honoured for their success during the last year.

This is the third year this event has been held by East Dunbartonshire Council as a way of marking the wide ranging achievements of the pupils in all its schools. They were the brain child of Councillor Una Walker who is the Convener of the Council’s Education Committee.

These awards are not restricted to academic excellence and celebrate the local, national and international achievements of young people in the authority. Among other achievements, they recognise success in sport, the arts, enterprise, creativity.

The following Bishopbriggs Academy pupils were among the recipients:

Andrew McCusker S1

Won the Scottish Secondary Championships for chess and represented Scotland at the European Chess Championships in Austria and at the World Championships in Brazil in 2011

David Williamson S1

Scottish Thai Boxing Champion

Stephen Conroy S2

World Kata Champion (age 13 – 14) in 2010

Sabrina Wong S3

Won gold medal at the 2010 British National Championships and won silver medal at the Belgian Open in April 2011 for Taekwondo in the 10-14 age group

Darren Mitchell S3

Member of the dance group, Fusion, which recently won the European Dance Championships. Darren won an individual award as best dancer in the Hip Hop category making him a European champion

Jack Stevenson S3

Has been selected for the Scottish U19 badminton team

Michael Low S4

Elected as a Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament

Amber-Leigh Kernan S4

Member of the Scottish Squad for Sports Acro and will be representing Scotland at an international gymnastics event this summer

David Ferguson S4

Is the 2010 Scottish Champion and has qualified to represent Scotland at the European Championship trials for Judo at under 50kg level

Stella Winters S4

Came 2nd in both the 1500m and 800m in the U17 Scottish Championships and is in the U17 Scotland team for athletics

Lewis Boyle S4

Has a very impressive record in athletics at U15 level. In 2010 he came 2nd at the Scottish Schools 800m, 3rd at 1500m, he came 1st at the Scottish 800m, won the London Mini Marathon and came 4th at the British Schools Cross Country. In 2011 he came 3rd in the Scottish Cross Country and 1st in the Scottish Schools Indoor 800m

Chris Chan S5

Took 1st place in the 2010 UK Championships for Karate in the 10 – 15 age group

Samuel Page S6

Member of the Scottish U19 cricket team

Ross Russell S6

Member of the Scottish National Cerebral Palsy football team. He recently played for the 1st team in the European Championships and has achieved 19 caps representing his country

Stephen McLaren S6

Current holder of the Karate World Championship title for 16 – 18 year olds

Alex Lamond S6

Received a 4th place at the Scottish Cross Country Championships and 2nd place at the Scottish National Indoor Championships 1500m
